Penn Grove

A modest, three bedroom dwelling located centrally in the city of Hereford. Surrounded by neighbouring residential properties, it has been designed with its context in mind. Consideration of this context influenced a design approach to reflect a deliberate subservience to some of the surrounding older buildings.

Energy Efficiency

The client’s future retirement needs were at the forefront of the design – low maintenance, energy efficiency and natural daylight with carefully considered picture window placement to make the most of the attractive views to the courtyard garden. The existing vegetation screens the house to provide privacy.

Sustainable Home

A mix of light coloured brick, alongside the natural standing seam metal roof, ensures the bold design recedes into its more polite suburban setting. The scale of the dwelling is similarly informed by its context, reducing the impact on neighbouring dwellings. The south facing aspect maximises its solar gained ensuring a sustainable home.

Taking in the views of Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains

The ‘L’ shaped design maximises the plot utilising the interior space and views.  The single storey wing is home to an open plan living area, with large bi-fold doors opening out onto the patio, creating a relationship between the outside and inside, perfect for entertaining and family life.

Penn Grove is nestled into its suburban street-plan, although surrounded on all sides, the views from within the site itself are of its private garden. The master bedroom opens out onto a roof terrace, with a long range vista from the upper floors taking in the views of Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains.
