Set adjacent to the grade II listed Old Court Hotel and within the Wye Valley AONB, the brief called for a sensitive, low impact design that respected the site’s rural, edge of village context. OHA proposed a single storey house to reduce visual impact, comprised of two parallel, offset ranges, separated by a flat roofed central thoroughfare with glazed panels in the roof to maximise natural light even within the core of the building. The design used local stone, slate and timber cladding, allied with modern high performance windows and contemporary proportions and detailing, while still providing a reference to a pair of linear agricultural buildings typical of the area. The design was commended by the Council’s Conservation and Planning Officer as being representative of high quality, innovative rural architecture.
